Thanks Pete, that link is a good one, don't know quite how the outer glass bulb can contain the inner halogen one which has to reach a high temperature. And I should have realised as I have one of those million candlepower hand lamps and that has a halogen bulb, and quite a beam

No they don't. My local B&Q stocks nothing like this slim 8-inch diam circular tube.

Dave, one on the second link - in 22 watt guise - looks like it could be the one!

One other little snag though - the compact controller circuitry is now missing. Is there anywhere I can buy this sort of thing, or has anyone got a circuit to hand I could build up from readily available components and that would do the job?
