Default Help with Nakamichi BX-300E please.

I have just dug this out and it's a little more poorly than it was a year or so ago.
Rewind will not function at all. Fast forward will only work if a tape isn't inserted. Playback will only last a second or two before ending, and only one spool turns.
Does it sound like the rubber tyre issue?

Additionally, should the two wheels holding the rubber belt be constantly turning when the unit is powered up but no playback etc has been activated? They just turn constantly of their own accord when mains power is applied.

It sounds like you need a set of belts and an idler tyre. The belt mentioned should be turning. You can get intermittent function problems with these these decks caused by the mode motor, removing it and cleaning it often restores normal operation.

Think when I get around to I'll start by replacing the idler tyre and take it from there.
Good to know the belt should be turning.
Thanks

I see there are some small white plastic nylon cogs. Is this the later version without a idler tyre, or have I not delved deeply enough yet?

Hopefully there is a picture of the cogs attached.

The idler tyre is located behind the matt black plate at the rear of the cassette housing. To remove the plate there are two small screws at the top corners of the plate. Undo the screws and gently lift the plate a little while pulling the top of the towards you. The idler is then exposed.

That does appear to be the version with gears rather than an idler wheel. It will be clear if you remove the backing plate.

Thank you both. I'll take a look behind the plate. In one sense I'm hoping it does have the idler wheel, as it sounds like a easy problem to solve.

I will likely be posting for further help!

Thanks again.

If you find you need a replacement idler tyre you can use a neoprene O ring instead. I did this on my BX100 and it's still going strong several years later.
