There is a 405 line aerial on a house i used to live in many years ago in worcester road Chipping norton , its still there today along with a broken dipole aerial .
My mother had them put up brand new when the house was being built for us back in the 60s.

What transmitters are the aerials for? Any chance of some pictures.

I used to pass this first one in Letchworth on my daily walk to school, only spotted it again today - just about hanging on - whilst taking my daily permitted exercise. It is sort of pointing in a London direction, definitely not the local Sandy Heath. There's also a BSB Squarial a few doors up.

The second one I spot most mornings, from the North Circular Road, you can only see the X from the road, on closer inspection there are a few other aerials sharing that chimney.

Images courtesy of Google Streetview, I hope that's allowed.

The first one is a classic - bayed Band-III coupled to a Band-I dipole-and-director.

I always wondered about the ubiquity of Band-I dipole--and-director arrays in these setups; sure, it was easier to implement but a dipole-and-reflector would have offered more gain and better front:back ratio. I guess that back in the 1950s the chance of there being a co-channel Band-I transmitter 'behind you' was unlikely, but from memory Band-I was always the worst for obscure reflections causing devastating 'ghosting' which could come and go [as the local gasometer went up-and-down or the dockyard-crane five miles away turned].

House across the road from me has one.

The first element has sat diagonally for as long as I can remember.

It points towards Sutton Coldfield

Default 1956 Aerial Picture - Cliftonville, Kent

One of my contacts on Flickr asked me about the aerial on this picture, as they knew I was interested in old technology.

https://www.***********/photos/trains...ff/49409668421

I could tell them the basics but I thought someone here could give a more comprehensive explanation.

Sorry I can't seem to embed the picture from Flickr.

Looks like a Channel 1 VHF vertically polarised 405 line BBC TV aerial to me!

That looks like an old Band 1 TV aerial for BBC 405 line reception.

I did wonder how well it would have received ITV from Croydon, possibly not so well as it's a Band I aerial & the Kent downs are in the way.

I would also go with channel one, looks the same length as the ones we had in Kent. Alexandra/Crystal palace.

That is a nice aerial and picture. That could be a shot from 1953! How has that survived so long and no Band 3/4/5/ added.
I always wonder what television receiver was on the end of these aerials. John.

The caption says taken in 1956 so not so old at that point. Looks huge though!

Yes, a classic 3-element [dipole, director and reflector] Band-1 array - atop another classic rural-semi house.

I can easily imagine this from the early-1950s.

Seen today on the road from Swindon to Wroughton. A little horizontally-polarised 3-ele BIII pointed at Membury.

(horizontal polarisation was usually used for low-power 'infill' transmitters; Membury wasn't exactly low-power!)

The robust mast and chimney-lashings suggest it also once held a BI antenna, now departed.

I could pick up Membury in Kent many years ago, amongst other band 3 stations. I think that's the one alongside the Membury services on the M4.

We have a Membury down here and coincidentally its not far from the Stockland Hill transmitter.

Yes, Membury was next to the M4 service-area, the site was an old WWII RAF airfield. It always perplexed me that the IBA decided Membury should be a relay of Midlands-ITV [ATV] so the unfortunate residents of Swindon, Marlborough, Newbury, Trowbridge, Farmborough etc. got 'local' ITN news-coverage overlapping with Glossop, Ellesmere-Port, Oswestry, Chesterfield and Newark.

https://tx.mb21.co.uk/info/405/itv/midlands.gif

To me it would have made far more sense for Membury to have been a relay of London-ITV, London being only an hour's drive/train-journey away whereas getting from Trowbridge to Chesterfield - even in pre-Beeching times - would have taken most of a day.

Southern would have been another suitable region, though the south midlands area is hard to fit into the usual regions.
