Yet another TV to identify...
Quite by chance I caught an episode of 'Bless this House' this morning. Sid was watching a bit of errm, well, sort of softcore porn, this being on at lunchtime,
But as it was the 1970s I suppose we shouldn't be surprised... Anyway what was Sid's TV? My guess would be a Thorn either an 950 or an early 1400? The set isn't a model I recognise though I am just going on the control knobs and the general look of the thing. The set looks a bit wide in the picture but I think that's down to the aspect ratio of the original programme it looked as if it had been stretched to fit a modern screen rather than transmit it with gaps either side. Does anyone recognise the set? The programme was first shown in 1973 so either way Sid's telly was a few years old. A lot of viewers had 'gone colour' by then. |

Re: Yet another TV to identify...
It's a Ferguson branded 1400. That's all I know but I hope it helps
Edit: Possibly a 2497, but not 100% sure '77 Last edited by 19Seventy7; 30th Jun 2020 at 10:39 pm. |

He's right you know! (well nearly)
Seems to be a Ferguson 19" 3646 https://www.vintage-radio.net/forum/...34&postcount=1 First picture. Well done: I wouldn't have known myself but the knobs did look a bit 'Thorney'! Cheers Nick |

I would concur, undoubtedly Thorn 1400 chassis. Your Sony seems to be s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g 4:3 material to fit the screen!

Re: Yet another TV to identify...
That's the set! The 1400 certainly had a lot of cabinet styles, badge engineering must have been at it's height in the 1960s!
The 1400 also seems to have had a fair production run as well. They were plagued with intercarrier buzz which got really bad on the odd occasion that captions were used. Thorn issued a fair few mods to cure this but there was no complete cure, most sets suffered to a degree. Considering how long the chassis was in production you would have thought they would have cured it at some point... Well I suppose they did on the end, they released the 1500! |
