Default Tantalum ESR?

H folks

a simple question, can one measure a Tantalum cap for ESR like you would an electrolytic?

Thanks

Yup.

Because of ther non-wound construction you can find quite low ESL and ESR values from a good one.

However, it's been found that one way to dispatch the little devils to the afterlife is to use this low impedance to carry high ripple or surge currents. It's recommended to use them in series with a current limiting resistor which neatly removes the low-Z advantage :-(

If you want to experiment with some tants I offered some FOC but after 2 pm's no response so your welcome to play.

Cheers

Beware, though, if you feel tempted in your experiments to try one with reverse polarity to watch it go up, the yellow-green staining they create is the very devil to shift.

Many of the professional TV cameras that I have in the museums collection suffer from exploding tants, mostly cameras from the 1970s. If you are quick you can find the offending cap by following the wisp of smoke emanating from the top of the camera! sometimes there is an "upstream" choke which burns out as well, two to replace but it does protect the PSU a bit.

You can measure ESR, but if it measures correctly the tantalum can be short circuit as well, so when testing, always use a dc ohm measurement as well.
