Seeing the thread on radio earths,I thought I would mention this .I have 2 aerials in the loft, one of these is a wire loop around the perimeter of the roof space ,it works well especially on the higher frequencies,its also fairly good on Mw using an ATU,however this is a horizontal loop,should this be vertical?
PS this is not used for transmitting!

I would stick to horizontal since vertically polarised antennas tend to pick up more static/electrical noise. However closed loops can be fairly quiet.

Having said that of vertical antennas have a look at this site. I've used this antenna with very good results from 500kHz to 7MHz. They don't take up much space and can be knocked together in a very short time.I have one running along the plastic gutter of my garage with the vertical ends sections clipped to the wall.

These are low gain, low noise antennas as you will find out,but they are fairly broad band and can be very effective.
