Why is the CV1068 stabiliser valve so heavy !
Am just looking at a 10E/11449 cold-gas stabiliser valve, aka a CV1068. It's not the four internal stacked 70V regulator sections that amaze me, but rather the weight of the beast. I haven't come across such a heavy glass enveloped valve before. Maybe the internal metal can configuration is nested, sort of like a microphone transformer with multiple mu-metal screens.
Is the AM crown logo from marconi-osram ? This valve has a paper square glued to the glass for maker/model info - I guess a cold-gas stabiliser makes that practical. I'll post a photo tomorrow, as I can't easily identify one on the internet with the same paper logo patch. |

Another pic, with same (?) logo, albeit not on paper: http://img.over-blog.com/492x600/3/4...-10E-11449.jpg

"Is the AM crown logo from marconi-osram ?"
Isn't that just the standard Air Ministry logo from that era? Cheers Chris |

Yes it's the Air Ministry logo - thanks. There is a glass marking " M.C. 12255 " but I can't seem to easily identify that.

Re: Why is the CV1068 stabiliser valve so heavy !
I have some similar valves, though not the 10E as used on Navy electronics and they are indeed heavier than any other valve I've come across, more like a hand grenade than a valve.

They're also rather top-heavy, so I can't see them being used in anything subject to shock or vibration, even with support of the bulb.

Re: Why is the CV1068 stabiliser valve so heavy !
Yes a hand-grenade is a fitting description !
I know that some forms of gas mixture for regulators included a titch of radioactive gas content, but that was about my limit to plausible reasons for the weight, apart from some hefty internal compartments for the four sections. |

Re: Why is the CV1068 stabiliser valve so heavy !
It's a heavy valve, there was one in my Marconi CR150 comms. receiver, another heavy valve for its size was a 6080 which I had in a PSU.

Re: Why is the CV1068 stabiliser valve so heavy !
I have two types, some are NS2's and the other's maybe 100E's, both have only two wires though so the anodes must be commoned.

Herewith a photo of an STV280/80 bearing the Marconi badge of that period .
The Naval identity is NS1 , the NS2 being a single-gap type . Laurie. |
