Soviet KVN49 TV - UK Vintage Radio Repair and Restoration Discussion Forum

I found this item in Germany. The condition is very bad, but it does not look like a German TV set. The vendor calls it a "kbn 49"
Does anybody know it?

Look at the inside then! All tubes are missing, the CRT is cracked and the loudspeaker is missing.

I've seen pictures of this type of set before. It is a Russian set. It is likely it was exported into the former DDR. KBH49 is cyrillic. In latin script it will be KVN49.

It is a very rare set. I believe the CRT is a Soviet type, but the valves are standard octal types. Well worth buying.

Soviet was a very good idea! Googling for KVN-49 brought a lot of information, like this link with good photos (German only) http://www.scheida.at/scheida/Televi...CCP_KVN-49.htm.

It's indeed Soviet, a very cheap "people's Televisor", made from 1948 until 1960! It is Band I only. About 2,4 millions were sold, so spare parts should be available.The circuit is available, simple parts, a good project for beginning with restorations of old TV. Another advantage: It is for 625 lines, no need of an Aurora. Only for the sound it must be modified to make it compatible with Norm B.

I hope the price will not go too high...

Gee, looks like it is a TRF set too as there appears to be no IFT's in sight on the schematic. We would not have had those over here as otherwise the Post Office would not have had a local oscillator to track all the license dodgers!
Fantastic project though!

It is likely that the KVN49 was in it's initial form a TRF receiver but later versions would certainly be superhets because turret tuners were fitted to tune to the three OIRT VHF channels.
The later versions will be unrecognisable from the early production models. I can't imagine they were installing round CRTs into the sets after 1955.
Also, those American metal valves will have been replaced by Soviet all glass types.

Another Russian KVN49 TV has turned up, in France. There is a date on the back, 1959. Surely not?

Nicolas Blazianu states that the set could have originated from Czeckoslovakia or Romania because the RF unit differs from that fitted into the original Russian version
