Default Toshiba V9600B

There is a fault with this VCR and I am asking if anyone recognise this fault.

I have replaced all the electro in the PSU and the regulator and the fault still remains.

The symptoms are, clock runs, does go online and standby but does not accept cassette.
When manually loaded cassette, does not thread. The idler is running slowly and continuously in online mode. When standby is pressed it stops.

Does this ring a bell?

If not I'll look out for a scrap for the servo board..

I don't know if you've checked the obvious, but a machine that won't thread up shouts slipping belts or rubber idlers to me.

I don't remember many VCR's by model any more, but an old favourite that might be worth a check other than the belts mentioned could be a dirty mode switch perhaps?

This machine is a Betamax IIRC.

I never saw that much of this machine, and only the normal worn rubber bits on the ones I did see.

Hi Guys, thanks for your help, it was the servo board at fault, I stopped it over with another and it runs ok again.

Just the tape path to sort out now *sigh* any tips..?

I may just swop the deck over as a last resort..

Check the loading belt;
When loading the cassette manually, without the cassette loader,
the loading motor when press play is running?

Naturally, with the cassette loader, it's out of mechanism,
you activate the internal switch for consensus, in the cassette loader.

Sorry for my bad English.

This machine was noted for lower drum wear and premature head failure. Early symptoms of lower drum problems are a reluctance to rewind the tape to completion that is not caused by the tape transport mechanism itself. Reducing the back tension did not offer a solution to the rapid deterioration. As the wear progresses, tape path problems start to appear with bad tracking and tape damage. Worth taking a look as the symptoms can lead to incorrect diagnosis. The lower drum also takes on a dull grey colour. I sold large numbers of these machines and to be fair, Toshiba replaced heads and lower drums FOC throughout the life of the machine. Other than that they were reliable. Regards, John.

Thanks John, that is very useful information.. Tape path sorted, I get the occasional good picture then snow. Would this be sign of head wear? I found scratches on the upper drum when I removed it, so I will try replacing that with another from the spare.

More than likely head/drum wear.
You might be able to set up the tape path to improve it slightly but I doubt it will hold for long. I binned all VCR service data and jigs and a quick look through my VCR spares unfortunately comes up with nothing. Your spare deck may be ok but from experience it may be suffering from the same sypmtoms. You never know, you could be lucky. Not the best of Beta machines. The Sanyo must take top marks for reliability and quality. J.
