Default PCL82 Valves and Output Transformer

Anybody happen to have a couple of working PCL82s they want to get rid of or sell?

Also looking for a suitable output transformer if anyone has one. 3 ohm or 8 ohm is fine.

I'm just looking to build a simple valve guitar practice amplifier capable of putting out a couple of watts.

Thanks,

Jerry

I have one NOS PCL82 and two used examples which I can test if you're interested.

Proceeds from the sale would go to charity, namely the Ipswich branch of the RSPCA, so it's a case of make me an offer. Postage will be 2.90.

Jerry, I might have some PCL82 in the attic. Can you wait till Sunday, I'll climb up and check. I think somewhere I might have an ECL83 PP tranny, (not exactly matchin but it might work) probably up in the attic as well.
Remind me on Sunday, I'll certainly will check.

Stef.

Damn sure, quite a few PCL86, if they are any good for your project.

Hi Jerry,

I have got a couple of ex-TV PCL82 that test good on the valve tester (spec values given in brackets) and are a close match (I assume as you want two you are building a push-pull amp in which case a matched pair would be sensible):

Valve #1 Pentode Section 1a=35mA (41); gm=5.0 (7.5)
Valve #2 Pentode Section 1a=36mA (41); gm=4.5 (7.5)
Valve #1 Triode Section 1a=2.1mA (1.5); gm=1.1 (2.4)
Valve #2 Triode Section 1a=3.3mA (1.5); gm=1.7 (2.4)

I've sent a PM with price etc
Cheers, Jerry

SE or PP? Suitable OPT's at VVT and Bluebell.

Should have mentioned before that it's a single ended design. The second PCL82 is just a spare.

Cathoderay57 has kindly agreed to supply me with two tested PCL82s but I'm still looking for a suitable single ended output transformer if anyone happens to have one?

Cheers,

Jerry

I would go for a transformer with 35 or 40 to 1 ratio if the speaker is 3 ohm.
20:1 if 15 ohm.

Sounds about right. For an anode voltage of 200V and for 3.3W output power PCL82 needs to see an anode load of 4.5k so for a 3 Ohm speaker the correct ratio is 39 to 1.

Hi Jerry, just a thought. As you are using this as a guitar amp I'm a bit sceptical about the gain performance of a single PCL82. Unless your guitar pickup has an awesome output voltage the volume is likely to be disappointing and I suspect you are going to need a high gain preamp valve in front eg ECC83/12AX7. Cheers, Jerry

My guess is that PCL82's are cheap and plentiful whereas ECL82 are more costly so your less likely to pick up a pair cheaply.

Cheers

Thanks for the advice Jerry. I normally use a treble boost pedal before my amp. this provides a fair bit of gain so hopefully I'll be okay without a preamp valve.

Yes, PCL82s are cheap and plentiful. I'm also going to power the PCL82 from a 19V 3.2A laptop power supply I have lying around. The 16V heater will be supplied directly via a suitable series resistor and the HT via an adjustable DC-DC converter providing the required 200V or so. Suitable 40W DC-DC converters are available from China for less than 4.50 delivered if you don't mind waiting up to 2 months for delivery.

A bit unorthodox I know but it should work okay.

You want to make the whole thing run on 12 volts so you can do a bit of busking using valve power.
