Default Tiny Torch

A friend of mine who buys and sells got this in a job lot and she gave it to me. It is a lovely little thing and the bulb works!

Has anyone seen anything like it before or have any information on it?

My mother used to have a torch very like this - same size, same lever switch, powered by 2 cells - but both halves of the case were nickel plated, which looked very smart in an Art-Deco sort of way. She used to buy what were called "penlight batteries" which were 2 cells (in series) in one paper sleeve. She used to snap this apart to separate the cells to fit into this torch. Unfortunately she lost it during a visit to a farm, and it was found months later, trampled beyond repair by the cows!

Obviously the up market version! Mine seems to be tinplated under the paint.

If it's any consolation, gram for gram, tin is twice the price of nickel.

For what it's worth, the "Rd. No." puts it in the 1930's as well.

It's likely that the switch on that thing will outlive the lot of us!

I believe they were designed for ladies to see into their handbags at night or in the cinema. The light could be cupped by the hand so as not to disturb cinema goers and was small enough that it could be slipped into a blouse or dress pocket. A rare example of a "technical" product aimed at women more than men. But men would often buy them to use as a pocket torch for when they were under the car in the garage tinkering.
