Default New Zealand Radio-Telegraph Service 1939

Some of you may have seen this short 1939 documentary film, but I couldn't resist mentioning it. Marvellous... Sam Hallas posted the link over on the THG group.

Really interesting, especially the antique telephones then in use in rural New Zealand.

Would they have been 'party line ringing'? I notice father only gave a quick burst of the magneto when he called up the 'local' Post Office. Would another rural dwelling have called in with two or three cranks of the genny?

Spot the HROs too. All shiny and new.

The mercury vapour rectifiers in the TX PSU were a nice touch- predating the Philips PA light show also on youtube by a good few years.

I guess youngster's passage on the Queen Mary wasn't too out of character- Mum and Dad's rural station with its tennis courts didn't look exactly impoverished!
