Use of symbols and special characters
Sometimes when attempting to use mathematical or scientific notation it's handy to use the conventional or proper notation (eg x² rather than x2). I hit upon this site http://www.alt-codes.net/ and used it for a while, then started to have problems when I transfered to a Windows 7 PC.
After a bit of searching around, I found these Wikipedia entries, which explains why the alt-code mapping has changed for codes above 127: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Code_page_858 Unfortunately, it seems to have left us with no alt codes for Pi, Integral sign, equals approximately and omega! Re: Use of symbols and special characters
Alt-234 gives capital omega Ω
Alt-247 gives approx equals ≈ That's how I have generated the above. |

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
√ Ω ∫ π ≈ #
you can always go the long way round and copy paste from Word or similar.

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
This is a great program that let's you assign special characters to a particular key-stroke. For instance I've got Ctrl-Alt-u and Ctrl-Alt-o set to µΩ respectively.

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
There is a problem with special symbols, some fonts don't display the correct one, best to spell them out... Ohms, mili etc.

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
I just use Windows Character Map - most of the ones you need are in the Verdana font.

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
Going slightly off-topic, Word has symbols for fractions of half, quarters and eighths, is there any way of finding symbols down to sixteenths or even thirtyseconds? I use Word to create drawings with dimensions in fractional inches. (Of items originally made in a world of Imperial Units before metric units took over).

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
At least in Word you can type them like 1/32 and then make the numerator superscript and the denominator subscript.
I THINK there's a way of actually drawing your own characters but such things are beyond me. - Joe Last edited by ThePillenwerfer; 30th Jan 2013 at 1:05 pm. Reason: Added illustration. |

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
Joe,
You can do it that way, but it's a lot more keystrokes and ends up looking more 'spread out' than the fractions which are available as symbols, they are quite compact. Andy |

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
I agree that the method I mentioned is far from ideal but is an improvement on plain 1/62.
Things can be squashed up a bit by fiddling with the line spacing, see below. It IS a lot of messing about but you could always make a file of the fractions you use and then cut and paste them as needed. - Joe Last edited by ThePillenwerfer; 30th Jan 2013 at 4:34 pm. Re: Use of symbols and special characters
To reinforce my thoughts, if it can't be read in good old plain ASCII text the effort to get it pretty may backfire. It's a case of style over content.

Re: Use of symbols and special characters
Any "free" musical note symbols anywhere?
