Speakers with roll surrounds are longer throw and lower efficiency requiring a more powerful amplifier to get the perfomance from them. The damping of the amplifier would not suit long throw speakers and lead to distortion.

I took the magnet off the back of the dodgy speaker.
It's only held in place by that two screw clamp bracket.

Cleaned the gap and checked coil for damage, nothing really obvious.

I then reassembled, rotating magnet until I couldn't hear any noise from the coil touching the magnet when the cone was flexed.

Finally tightened it down and distortion has gone. All seems to be working well.

Maybe it got knocked off centre during transport to its new home.
