Default Can I use my Colour bar generator as a standards converter?

Hi all,
Just a quick question.

I have recently purchased a Phillips Colour bar generator PM5519.
On the front panel it has 6 channels that can be tuned through the UHF band and also settings for what i assume are bands 1 and 3.
It has a video and audio input. so i connected a DVD player to it and tuned it into my Sony portable on VHF.
It produces a picture. although it will not lock vertically and is sort of split in 2. and i can also hear the test tone that the generator produces.

Would i be able to use this on a 405 line only set as a converter?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Jan

The PM5519 is an excellent little test generator. As Taz said, the VHF output is very different to System A though you may see something unlocked on a 405 line set. It certainly can't convert 625 lines to 405 lines.
