Don't think it is some sort of insulator?

No expert but I wonder if it is the screw in fuse for a WW2 mortar ?

My thought was get advice from an expert in ordanance. if it is a detonator it might still be live.

It does look like ordnance to me, a nose fuze. The fine thread is a giveaway, and all this type of thing had a date stamped into it for traceability. Where did it come from?

Corrosion suggests it was removed from its housing a long time ago....dropping it is not an option- best place for him in the short term is in a stout box with bubble wrap.

Yes it is or rather was empty. I came from the collection of an old former AT&E employee whose collection was mostly disposed of by his daughter nearly twenty years ago. But an interesting slightly telephone related as their Edge Lane Works had been turned over to producing ammunition for the poor guys in the trenches. Can't be many of those left that are known of. Sadly I don't know what hapened to it.
