Default Murphy A362 restore or not question.

Dear Forum,

I have a 1950ís Murphy A362 valve radio that was given to me and I would like some advice to whether I should take it upon myself to restore it or not.
On initial inspection there seems to be several oil/paper capacitors that are in very poor condition but at first sight most of the rest of the components seem to look ok.

Iíve noticed from the schematic that this piece of equipment operates on a live chassis, so with that respect I would use my isolation transformer when poking around in there when turned on.

I have never worked on radios before but I have fairly reasonable experience working with old valve musical amplifiers and tranny equipment and I do have some decent test equipment at my disposal including a 100Mhz scope and a 2Mhz sig-gen.

What do you think guyís, do or donít ? or would this be too big of a project for someone like me with zero experience working on valve radios ? It would be a great learning curve and a great achievement though for a first timer.

Many thank youís in advance ladies and fellas.

Tritone.

Hmmm well the chassis is of course only live if thats the side of the mains you have connected to it so make sure its connected the correct way round . the A362 is a funny set different valve types and heater voltages all over the place and the chassis isnt the best layout to work on however they are a cracking looking set and a good little performer when sorted .

Hello,
I've restored an A372 (very similar) they're lovely sets. Apart from the obvious safety considerations and changing one cap at a time (starting with the audio coupler) you will needs lots of patience as there are dozens of brown hunts and mine didn't perform properly until they were all replaced and some very well hidden so itís a fiddly job but worth it.

Good luck

John
