Liquid paraffin is food grade mineral oil which passes through the body inertly and just lubricates the inside of your innards. Like any mineral oil it will burn, but it's relatively viscous so I imagine the flashpoint is quite high.

I've no idea what these magnifiers were filled with, but I wouldn't expect it to be LP because of the cost. It may well have been some other clear petroleum product though. People were a lot more cavalier about safety risks back then.

I've always understood that it was liquid paraffin, but the Science Museum website just says oil or water: https://collection.sciencemuseum.org...agnifying-lens

I wouldn't think tap water would very good as it would go green in no time at all !!

There weren't any risks in the '50s.

Hi Andy, I've exchanged a few messages with the owner with a view to rescuing it! If I am able to get it, and then happen to decide its not for me then I'll happily pass it on to you. John its located in Hythe so I suspect quite an impressive aerial would have been required! The magnifier does indeed look ghastly!
