Default Philips 470A; replacing tuning drivecord.

Hi. I have a Philips 470A (1938) valve radio that I would like to sort a small problem out with regards to poor scale illumination. I believe that the scale backing reflector plate could do with some cleaning up due to tarnishing.

In order to access this, the drivecord requires removal, but looks awkward to refit (not shown in Philips or Trader s.sheets!). Does anyone have details of wire drive cord diagram from the restoration of their set?

It looks simple enough, but knowing Philips it can be tricky!

Regards,
Mike.

Default Re: Philips 470A pointer drive

Hello.
There is nothing tricky about the drivecord of this 470. Just take a very good look before you start to take off the old cord.

The backside of the pointer is a wheel with a spring inside.
This spring needs several rotations up, before it gets the power to move the pointer back, if you are tuning down your pointer with the drivecord.

The pointer comes back by the springcraft (behind the pointer at the backside of the scale) this springcraft gets "up-loaded" by turning the drive cord over this wheel.

Just try to understand the working of this simple mechanism and then there is just a bit of normal logic needed to put it all together after replacing the drive cord.

Before you put on the new drivecord just rotate the springwheel several times to give it the strength it needs to turn the pointer backwards
If you have done it once, you know it's in fact a piece of cake
