Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
Hi All,
Just a reminder that the Dulwich museum will be holding the annual Television Day tomorrow (Saturday 24th September). For the first time we will be running up the Baird Televisor and showing it working as part of the display in keeping with this years celebrations of 100 years of public service broadcasting. There will be many other early Televisions from the 1930's and a lot of post war and colour sets running as well. The rest of the museum will be open and other exhibits will be demonstrated throughout the day. Come along from 11:00 onwards and see what is new. The museum is at 23 Rosendale Rd SE21 8DS Mike...

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
It would be great if folk could take photos of the working sets for us in the frozen north.

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
Can't believe I just missed this. Just saw the reminder now.
Is the Baird part of the museum's collection and/or viewable on upcoming events? |

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
The Teleton TA12DU is quite a are receiver from 1971/2 often confused with the UHF only version the TA12U that looks identical. It is dual standard 405/625 with electronic standards switching. I repaired it for the museum a short while back. The line output transistor was intermittently O/C. Took a moment to work out what was happening!
This picture on the reproduction 30 line Baird was really bright and stable. This picture is very poor and gives no idea as to it's quality. It was a good day with piles of valves radios and components on the table top sale. Regards, John. |

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
I went along at short notice, having seen the message on here the night before. It was great to see the Baird Televisor in action. It's hard to photograph, since the picture is an illusion. You have to see it in real life. I hope it will become a regular or permanent exhibit.
The collection continues to develop, especially the more modern portable radios and the TV section, with various televisions switched on and working. A bit of drama as one pre-war HMV TV started smoking! There's still the old familiar items. A nice touch is the various antique electrical fittings and light bulbs dotted around the buildings. It was also nice to see some familiar faces and one or two new ones, but there seemed to have been fewer people than at previous events. I bought a Pye Black Box valve record player from the table-top sale and had to lug it home on the train. Thanks to the two kind people who took me to West Dulwich station with it. |

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
Great pictures Hamid. Just to fill you all in reference the smoke! It was the mains transformer in the radio receiver section of the Marconi 703 that caused all the fuss that may have been caused by a S/C rectifier valve. This was disconnected and the TV section worked very well all afternoon but no sound of course as the radio is used to reproduce the sound channel. Removing the IW4 350 cooled the transformer down but I doubt if it has survived. It stank out the entire museum buildings!
The 702 was investigated. This has been playing up for a while, the picture getting dimmer the longer it was on. Finally a few months ago it failed completely. Investigation showed that it had been fitted with a non standard EHT transformer and a series 500m/a slow blow fuse. Whoever carried out the work made quite a good job of it but it appeared to have been carried out a very long time ago. The fuse was blown and replacing it produced exactly as expected, sparking from the 5kv transformer! Another couple of jobs for Mike to rewind. Other than these two incidents that livened up the afternoon, everything went very well and the rest of the television collection performed faultlessly including the Argus VCR97 green screen home constructed receiver. Our visitors were very impressed. Thanks to everyone for their time and effort and especially to Eileen who makes a great Chilli and rice, very nice! John. |

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
Hi, sorry for the stupid question. I took some photos of an early crt TV receiver, but didn't ask anyone about it's history.
It is the one I have already posted pics of, not this one.

Re: Television Day at the Dulwich Museum
Hello Peter, I think the TV you refer to is the home constructed receiver using the familiar VCR97 tube. It was built by a guy that was in the RAF during the WW2 around 1949. The family watched the Coronation on it and was replaced just before ITA went on air in 1955.
He lived at Wimbledon but unfortunately I don't know the old address, a shame because I know Wimbledon very well and I'm just curious. I intend to give it a thorough examination with a view to careful restoration. We do have a cracking example of an Argus at the museum in full working order. John. |
