That's a clever little circuit and looks just the thing I need. I was worried about dumping all that power as heat, hence my OP. Could probably have phrased the question better.

Looking at the schematic then I'd need a 24V zener or could I use two 12V in series? As I have some 5A 12V zeners.

Andy, your on the right track but my guess is that the output from the bucket regulator will be too crude to use directly and you will need a linear regulator following it to iron out the bumps

For example, with bucket regulator set to 30V, then using a LM317 (operating with a 4V drop) is only 12W. I never actually got round to trying that bucket circuit as the only thyristor I had available is 1.2KV @ 200A and weighs about 1/2 kilo !

I intend to use the bucket regulator as the primary regulator to drop the excess voltage before then regulating it further,as you say Dave with a LM317 etc.

Ordered the parts,will let you know how I get on. Andy.
