Nice to meet Dave m0cemdave and Colin turretslug and hand over the items bought from me on this forum.
The only thing I bought ( I am trying to get rid of stuff!) was around 4 or 5kg of assorted size brass slothead screws. These I intend donating to North Norfolk Railway as they are always in demand for carriage restoration. We plan a visit there shortly as well. It is a brilliant venue indeed. Plenty of room, car boots were £10 including the admission for myself and Janet. A large transit van trader with say 8 tables or so being £20 including admission. Very fair prices indeed. There were also several rows of open front gazebos, 3M or so deep, total length of space of these available on site I roughly estimate as 60 to 80M? Possibly more. These can also be booked. The site is very large and a lot of cars parked in shade under trees as it was quite hot. Then there is the brilliant Rural museum with exhibits inside and larger machinery outside, plus gardens that are open later in the day. For a small town like Ramsey it is very impressive indeed. Even chemist and cobllers shops as exhibits. Plus a small steam stationary engine turning slowly by electric motor. We will definitely return in the next 3 or 4 weeks and have a good look around the museum and gardens. A very good turnout of buyers and sellers and the best part of all was the large band of organisers, helpers and stewards, all easily identified with high vis jackets. Very friendly and helpful as has always been what I found with their rallies previously held at St Neots over many years. In fact I would vote this the best rally site I can remember. We will definitely return next year. Only downside is the fenland roads for miles arround suffer from terrible subsidence and you need to watch where you position in the road and not drive too fast. Hope not OT?
Might be of interest to anyone who visited the rally. Been in touch with one of the rally organisers asking about the adjacent garden and wishing to visit fairly soon, as we were too tired and hot just after the rally. This is an extract from his reply: The Walled Garden (a separate charity) is open only Sundays from 2pm until 5pm. Please note, we close from the end of October for the winter and reopen around Easter. Rob

And I must have missed the first of the (rather optimistic!) 20mph uneven road signs, after nearly taking-off with the road suddenly all over the place, then going on for miles! It looked more like there'd been a large earthquake, rather than a bit of (usually localised) subsidence or they'd never used a steam roller when the roads were originally laid. And surprising these hadn't all been closed, as I imagine many vehicles get damaged on these. - especially at night, with even less visibility of where's least-worst to position on the road. |

I travel on the fen roads fairly often and they have got a lot worse in the last ten years, they were not designed for the size and amount of modern traffic and many have suffered from neglect. Years ago when the fens were drained a drain was dug, the embankment being the spoil. The road was then built on that. As the embankment spreads out over the years the road becomes very uneven, it can be quite unnerving being pitched about with a forty-foot drain running down one side with no protection barrier.
I attended the rally with a friend we were quite shocked at the state of the roads. Instead of repairs the powers that be just put in low speed limits.
