"ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I just opened up a Sharma keyboard amplifier to clean the pots and check the caps out etc before powering it up. I was pretty gobsmacked, as there was nothing inside apart from a bridge rectifier, two big reservoir caps, a small input/preamp board and that's it.
There's a big heatsink with two "ILP" HY60 amplifier modules though which explains the lack. A quick search on the net reveals little of their history;they seem to still be in production. Has anyone come across these before? Andy.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
The Award Session guitar amps used ILP modules too.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I tried to use one of these at a previous company to drive an ultrasonic transducer at 76kHz as the spec gave the bandwidth as around 100kHz. It did work but the internal Zobel network didn't like it as the resistor burnt out.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I have got a pair of those kicking about.
ILP used to supply transformers too. |

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I have used these before, very easy to wire up and (as Quad would say) as good as any well engineered amplifier. It was 30 years ago, doesn't time fly by!

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I've powered the amp up; the HY60 is specified at 30w into 8ohms. The woofer is a Celestion G10S-50 with a tweeter horn in parallel- no passive filter/X over. Whilst the amp has "oomph" the sound is distorted.
It could be the speaker has seen better days. Celestion's speaker model naming is pretty straight forward so G10 should = 10", but this speaker is more like 8" and 50 refers to power. I'll try this amp with a Celestion G15 100 cab I have and also do it bit more testing. To be honest this amp looks like junk and destined for the parts bin. I can use the cab for a 10w valve practice amp. I have another keyboard amp of the same era made by Technics which is far superior to the Sharma. You can see why these English companies went out of business . Andy.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I won't chuck them as the data sheet promises good performance-THD @ 1k < 0.015% .
For some reason however as the amp stand they're distorting badly- I need to get them on the bench to see what's happening. I tried them briefly into a different speaker with no improvement. Andy.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
They do need good decoupling capacitors or they go unstable.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
I've found a couple of these in a solid state-amp made by Fred Allen for a Compton Electrone CH2 organ. One of the units had failed and then the other one failed, luckily ILP Electronics still manufacture them.
Does anybody know why they might have failed? Last edited by thomass; 28th May 2015 at 5:53 pm. |

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
Could be due to speaker loading, if extra or wrong impedance speakers are being used.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
Connecting and disconnecting speakers while current is flowing can be a killer. Even with protection diodes, the transients can be faster than the sorts of diodes many people use. They think something fast enough for audio is sufficient, but they really have to be fast enough to clamp transients in order to do their job.
Amps feeding speakers via jack plugs also get a momentary short as well. Transistor amps need careful protection. David

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
My brother used a couple of these in his bass guitar amp. Mighty meaty it was too, they were HY200's IIRC, 120 watts RMS into 8 ohms.
Funnily enough I've been sorting through some old WW's from the late 70's and there are loads of ILP ads in them.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
ILP sold a lot of toroidal mains transformers as well. They were good parts and at good prices.

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
Hi.
I just became a forum member. And I see that there have been some discussions around the ILP HY60 amplifier modules. But I have not found information about where I can find replacement modules (HY60 & HY66). Can anyone inform where to buy these? |

Re: "ILP" HY60 Amp modules
Your welcome to the ones I have as I will never use them.
