What is this component?
Greetings
I've offered to have a look at a friends UPS (yes not vintage sorry) and I have come across this component on the AC supply side, the problem is that I dont know what it is? Would appreciate if someone could point me in the right direction in identifying it, it's in an Eaton 5p650AU UPS 650VA Cheers MM |

Re: What is this component?
It's a miniature, high-current discharge tube- under the heatshrink, there'll be a short ceramic tube with end caps. It's designed to quench short, intense over-voltage spikes (e.g. lightning) and the heatshrink hopes to contain the splinters of ceramic shrapnel if the spike is really brutal!
It should measure open-circuit if in good condition (at least with "usual" ohm-meter voltages!) |

Re: What is this component?
Difficult to tell with the heat shrink on it but possibly a GDT or spark gap ?

Re: What is this component?
That makes sense considering where it was, the double sided board was making it hard to follow.
Thanks very much to all! Cheers MM |
