Philips G8 - CRT Types
Hello, did the G8 have a 26" 110 degrees CRT , ie: A66-140X ? or were they all 90 degree?

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
All G8 CRTs were 90 degree delta gun types. 22 and 26" tubes and from 1976 a 20" CRT model was added to the range of G8 models.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
The G8 was unusual in using two different types of 90 degree 26" CRTs in their model range, the A66-120X and the electrically similar but slightly larger A67-120X. I don't recall any other UK manufacturers doing so but I could wrong.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
The A67-120X was sourced from North America. It's most likely an RCA tube.
It has been fitted in other brands such as Pye, Ekco and Invicta. DFWB. |

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
Hi.
I recall the 20" version that Fernseh mentions. The CRT was type A51 220X and employed an integral magnetic shield so didn't require the usual external shield as used in the 22" and 26" versions. Regards Symon |

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
The 20" G8 was incredibly compact yet used standard G8 modules and for all that it turned out be a very reliable set. I think the CRT was imported from Japan, might be wrong though.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
Thanks chaps for the quick reply. I guess the 110 degree G9 is a very rare set?

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
The G9 is a very rare set. Only recently after a long search Forum member System A was very lucky to find this excellent set:

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
You learn something new everyday, never seen one in a PYE group set although I suppose a manufacturer had to keep options open during the colour boom period in case of short supply.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
I have seen the '27' inch A67-120X fitted in the Thorn 3500. I presume Mullard could not produce enough tubes in such a busy period. J.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
They might have been manufactured under license instead of imported. Mazda probably manufactured them, and possibly SEL and/or Videocolor. According to radiomuseum.org Blaupunkt was the main user of those tubes (I remember being said they had a horrible reputation for going flat) and there is actually a German Philips K7N that uses the A67-120X if that is not a printing error in the original documentation. It would be interesting to know the brand used in G8 sets. If Mullard (or another Philips brand) maybe the stamping on the bell can shed some light on its origin.

Re: Philips G8 - CRT Types
I have an A67-120X in a Decca Bradford which is Mullard badged.
I have a 20" G8 which I need to get going again. It did have an odd CRT which I think was also used in some Pye 20" 725 series TVs. Glyn |
