Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
Hi I just picked up a untouched but damp Ferguson 988t TV today, it appears to be fully intact and original, full of dripping wax caps, but was cleaning it inside and out, but stopped when I looked closely at the dropper, is the white fibre disk under is asbestos!! And the dropper wire sleeves are these woven glass fibre or asbestos as well? The TV is wrapped up in bin liners! awaiting it fate

Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
Crt fitted MW31-74 the web sed it was built with a MW31-16? this must be a newer CRT? The CRT socket is lose and will also need fixing. Apparently acid free silicone is the way to go! And it looks like it was a replacement CRT https://vintage-radio.net/forum/showthread.php?t=11867
And from https://www.thevalvepage.com/teletech/tube_rep/spec.htm Type MW31-16 with Clear Glass Face Type MW31-74 with Grey Glass Face What difference will the grey glass face make? One ECL80 has lose crumbs in it! So orded a used one. from what I have read on this site the dropper is cement covered and prone to corroding through the resistance wires and as this one has been damp for a while maybe the dropper is dead and just be replaced? Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
Good morning,
I think the white fibre disk under the dropper is an asbestos washer. I think it is fairly safe to leave it where it is. An issue could arise if it is disturbed too much (I.e scraped, filed, rubbed up which could release fibres) The heat resistant flex I don’t believe is asbestos based. The dropper does look in poor condition and looks to have overheated at some point looking at the 2 dark bands around its body lower down the resistor. The set looks like a relatively easy restoration, The Mullard CRT should be ok and the valves are all standard B9a telly valves and easily obtainable. Although as it has signs of damp the LOPT should be well and truly dried out for a week or 2 before applying any power to the set. Christopher Capener

If it's asbestos I want it out, but I don't want to remove it. Any advice? It will have a long time to dry out!

Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
I wonder if painting it with VHT car paint would keep it all encased? And because it’s meant for high temperatures it shouldn’t just burn off. I’d spray some into a container then use a small brush and give the asbestos washer a good soaking in it.
I’ve not actually tried this myself! Although I have some sets containing asbestos, so I will try it at some point. Regards Lloyd |

Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
Stuffing wax caps is a personal decision, do what you feel comfortable with. If you do stuff them, leave information with the set that the capacitors are new, save someone finding out the hard way.
For what’s it worth I take the view that the set would have been repaired with what was available in new components at the time of the repair. So I would not bother. Has a say, do what you feel is best for you.

Yes I will PVA a note in about the repairs, and a new valve layout as I think snails eat the original! also I decided not to restuf the caps, the dropper may be dead and so the problem of what to do with that, rebuild or replace with modern power resistors? |

Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
leave the asbestos washer alone. If your worried, without removing it, just soak it with some PVA glue. It will turn to concrete when dry and never be a hazard. J.

Re: Ferguson 988T dropper problem?
PVA is not heat proof, the heat proof car paint sounds better, but I will need to test if the dropper is dead
