Default Ferguson Record player / Sprague cr-esp 250/18

Hi

Im trying to fix a Ferguson transistor record player, I dont know the model number.

it keeps blowing the glass fuse so i replaced the faulty Transistor AC176 but its still blowing the fuse

Im trying to check some of the capacitors one of the is a Sprague CR-ESP 250/18 does this mean its a 250uf at 18v? as im not getting any reading from this one on my meter

Thanks

Ian

The 250/18 is indeed 250uf @ 18v. If it needs replacing, the nearest modern equivalents are 220 or 330uf. 25v types should be easily obtainable. When you say you're not getting any reading from the Sprague capacitor on your meter, what type of meter is it and what range are you using. On a suitable ohms range, a good cap. should at first show a very low resistance, which rises to infinity as the cap. charges. As to the transistor - the AC176 is one of a pair, the other most likely being an AC128. Both should be changed, but do not use NOS AC128/176 These will most likely exhibit the 'tin whisker' problem. By temporarily removing the cooling clip, and ensuring that the metal cases of each transistor are neither touching each other, nor the heatsink towhich they are bolted, you can prove whether either or both these transistors needreacing.

It was the 250/18 cap causing the problem, I replaced it with a 220uf cap and a new pair of transistors and now working well I also replaced the other caps for good measure.
