I don't have any R-R's myself, but I was interested in this quote and a similar sentiment in post 11. How would you say recording a CD onto tape improves the final listening experience, (presuming this is just a straight copy)?

Hi.

It's adds a degree of 'warmth' to the sound. Something which is notably absent from pure digital recording, although things have improved greatly in recent times. I'm far from expert on the technicalities but I assume it is due to distortion, which just goes to show that distortion is not necessarily an entirely bad thing. I understand that some recording studios are dusting off their old analogue gear for much the same reason.

It may be a purely subjective thing. I just know I'd rather settle down with the tape than the original CD in many cases.

Cheers,

Roger.

Great news. I just bought a Sanyo MR-151. This was the model my dad bought me in 1967 when I was sweet 17. It looks almost unused but I may have to play with it a bit to get it working.

I've seen a couple on eBay before but both looked a bit worse for wear so I'm very excited about this one. I know it's no match for my Logic 7 but I've only bought it for sentimental/nostalgia reasons.

I'm listening to a reel-to-reel tape right now on my Akai 4000DS II through a Panasonic micro system (old enough to have line in and out sockets). It was made from an LP, played with a ceramic cartridge (my decent turntable is in the loft) onto not-the-world's-best tape.

I think the tape recording process adds a certain "warmth" all of its own, and reel-to-reel has something that cassette doesn't. It seems that, in the dogged pursuit of an ever-more faithful reproduction of the original sound, we have overlooked the whole concept of benign distortion.

Or maybe I'm just biased because reel-to-reel was the first recording format with which I experimented, and vinyl was always the original source material .....

I use a Studer b67 when I master music.

I have a mk II which I just acquired because I could not find a TCA 561 controller chip anywhere to repair my mk I. So if anyone knows of anywhere that I could find one.

The mk II sounds really excellent. It was usec on Radio 2 shows in the 1970's with the likes of Terry Wogan, Michael Aspel and Kenny Everett. Pretty special!

I get to check the tape tension tomorrow with my little tape tension gauge and then there's the need of an oscilloscope along with my millivolt metre to trim the play and record cards..

Thanks for the information Michael. I had no luck there but a place called Audio House in Switzerland was recommended me who in turn suggested a place called Revox Service and I now await a response to an email that I sent.
