Default Harpenden BVWS 24th February

BVWTM Fundraising Stall

The BVWTM will have its own fundraising stall at Harpenden this year (kindly provided at no charge by the BVWS). To raise funds for the Museum, a raffle is being held, with tickets available at £1 each from the stall. There are four prizes of vintage radios, pictured at the end of this post is one of them.

It is a fine example of a McMichael model 374 from about 1937. It employs 7 valves including magic eye and rectifier. It is housed in a substantial wooden cabinet, with an Art Deco motif consisting of sun and rays which “emanate” from the magic eye. It was an expensive model in its day priced at 16gns. A very desirable and rare receiver. In 2007 a noted McMichael enthusiast commented that only six or seven examples of this model are known to exist, including the radio pictured here. The receiver is un-restored, and has not had power applied for many years.

The other prizes consist of a 1940s bakelite receiver with original pastel colour paint, a 1930s transportable receiver, and a 1940s American receiver. All of the receivers are in as-found condition, so the new owner can enjoy restoring these radios to their former glory.

Please visit the stall on the day, support the BVWTM and buy raffle tickets to win one of these radios. ALL proceeds go directly to the BVWTM. The draw will take place before the auction commences, and the lucky winners will be able to take their radio home that day. The bring-and-buy stall will also be operating where one or two items may be disposed of at 10% commission to BVWTM.

British Vintage Wireless & Television Museum, Dulwich. Registered Charity No. 1111516.

Good fund raising idea I like it.

I intend going to Harpenden next week and will enter the raffle.

What a good idea!

I'd certainly buy a few tickets for the McMichael alone!

Looking forward to next Sunday,

Greg

Hi All,

I have now lotted up most of everything for the Harpenden Auction on Sunday.

I have sent the Auction Catalogue to Paul and he will make it available here and on the BVWS website when he can.

There will be a good number more lots added on Sunday as quite a lot of stuff is arranged to be brought to the venue on the day.

There are no pictures of items for Harpenden Auctions. There never have been.
Doing them for Wootton Bassett is more than enough work.

Might be something like this

The Magic keyboard bit seems to be press button tuning.

Cheers

Marconi Radio for ThreeSeven to take to Phil G4SPZ
VOR test set - for Mike Barker to take to Golborne (Ed Dinning)

Just a quick Thanks to all that helped make today at Harpy a good day (I went at lunchtime!) Lots of poeple to say Hello to, and some excellent results on the bring and buy!

I only purchased some US style plugs and sockets, and some lacing cord

The Emor didn't sell its reserve was £500 which was too much for anyone in the hall.

Another fantastic meet thanks to the 6 million dollar man (Mike B) and a fantastic effort by all the HARPY team we all appreciated it.

Cheers

It didn't Rob. There was a bid of £350, but reserve was £500. Seller dropped to £450 but still no takers.

A most enjoyable day out though!

Morning all,
I had a great day, just bought some valves and capacitors plus a couple of radios from the auction.
I didnt get out of there until 6:45 by the time we had finished sorting people out.
After popping in to see a forum pal on the way home and having a major diversion close to home because of an accident I didnt get in until 11:00!!

I must say that I wasnt greatly impressed with the quality of the food (sausages anyway)
or heating, it was freezing in that hall yesterday.
I wouldnt normally mention it but its the fact that Mike had said the cost of the hall for the day is £600!
I feel for that price things should be a lot better.

Gripe over, a big thanks to all those involved in making this event possible.
The amount of effort required to make it work is enormous.

Cheers

£600 for the hall? Crikey, thats expensive! Food, er well, I do not expect it to be any different - it is usual event style catering, that being said I think the Cupcakes were good (well Howard thought so, sinking two in a few minutes!)

It was a bit chilly in the hall, which surprised me - it is normally far too warm for me!

Really a couple of minor points though, its a lot of organising, and all done without charge, so we must be thankful for that

As it turns out I won and had first choice of the 4 radios on offer. I went for the McMichael, a very nice set and completely original. I look forward to restoring it.

I made 3 purchases from the auction, a Bush DAC10 which went very cheaply, an HMV 1356 and another McMichael a 481AC. The last 2 were both already restored and working which is not what I usually go for. I like the HMV which has an unusual variation on the push - pull output theme; the speaker winding on the output transformer is centre-tapped which allows 2 seperate negative feedback paths one to the cathode of each output valve. The McMichael 481 is a very nice large table model with a large tuning scale. As you select wavebands a white arrow is displayed at the side of the appropriate waveband scale. A small pointer is attached to the three position tone switch and points to the tone setting you have selected. There is a similar pointer showing the status of the one/off volume control. Another big bonus was that it has a good bright magic eye which is probably worth what I paid for the whole set. The magic eye will stay in the set, I am very much against removing valuable valves from perfectly good sets.

As has been said the hall was very cold and there were fewer stalls than in the past. Full marks to Mike and "the team" for the whole event and for getting though the marathon of an auction. They must all have been knackered by the end of it.

Colin M

Enjoyed the day and a big thanks to all involved in the organisation. Had to constantly have a word with myself to avoid auction fever, not entirely successfully!
Thanks also to Jeremy for the handover of a couple of "doorstops" as he referred to them!
Have to aslo comment on the lack of heating in the hall, I don't feel the cold very easily but it was COLD! Not acceptable for the cost of hiring it.

Well done Colin! When I saw a McMichael was being given away I was very nearly tempted to rejoin the BVWS and shoot off to Harpenden and buy all the tickets
