Unknown Philips TV
Hello All,
I know it's been the Festive year but Iv'e hardly had a drop. My current query is this. Philips made a mono crt tv with two vertical boards. This was prior to the 210. Also came under the Peto Scott name. From memory they did one with a tape recorder built into the top. I was in the trade when the 1500 came out, we all sang it's praises as it was the first domestic machine, or was it? Did this set show video from the tape deck? I'm getting old now and have slight dementia issues but this is so clear, or is it just a crazy blip I'm having. Cheers anyone. |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
Any tape deck in a TV set from the 60s would have been for audio, not video. The 1500 video machine came out in 1972. Hope that helps Tony.

Re: Unknown Philips TV
The twin PCB set is the Style 70, 19 or 23" tubes.
I doubt whether a TV cabinet is the ideal environment for a VTR, but one was produced known as Telcan ; http://www.totalrewind.org/revolution/R_telwes.htm |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
That was the beast, thank you. I was aware about the dates of the tv and the introduction of the 1500. I worked for a company in Huddersfield (Kenneth Levells) very upmarket. We were the only one of two shops to get them. We beat Woods Music Shop by two days. Thanks both of you for your help.

Re: Unknown Philips TV
That's a new one on me courtesy of the "I was there" generation of trade professionals. How many got sold, are there any still around and how often were they mistaken for audio recorders anyway?

Re: Unknown Philips TV
Hiya Dave,
Info on these is so scant, it was a very faint memory. Ordinarily I would have said no way as the 1500 is world recognised. I usually try and research details before asking on here but I drew a blank. Finding one nowadays would be hard................................ Unless |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
I remember the Telcan vtr mentioned in post #3 becoming aware of it in middle 60s.I tried a number of experiments with existing audio machines in order to record video in this period.Very primative though, getting a TK5 to record in fast forward was not easy and resulted in lots of on screen noise and laughter from my workmates.Absolutely no attention paid to trivial details like preemphasis and deemphasis and other things like heads etc.Still if you don't try you never learn.Peter.

Re: Unknown Philips TV
There was talk of someone modding a reel to reel in the 70's to capture video, it must have been very poor. There was the Fisher Price camcorder that used audio cassettes. I only ever saw one and never paid any attention to it because of the brand. Showed it can be done though.
We all raved about proper camcorders in the 80's, happy times! |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
I remember playing with a new video recorder that used 1/4" ordinary recording tape. It ran at a very fast speed but the results were poor even with a Philips 17TG100U as a monitor. This must have been around 1964/5.
I cannot recall the maker but the model number was something like VTR500. The makers name may have started with an F. John. |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
Akai made a vtr using 1/4" tape in the late 60's or early 70's.We used to joke about them being made in Scotland (a play on the makers name).Peter.

I actually bought one in the early 1970's from a guy in Gosport via Exchange & Mart! I never did manage to get it going properly and in the end broke it up and managed to sell the fractional H.P. motor that drove it at crazy speeds! Peter |

Re: Unknown Philips TV
December 1964 IIRC there was one built into the top of a TV set as well.

Re: Unknown Philips TV
Thanks for that. I played with it for hours at the tender age of 16 but never managed to get anything more than a looowwww definition picture with terrible sync. Complete waste of time and effort and it cost the owner of D&B Television who I worked for at the time, a lot of money! I think it got passed on or dumped..J.

Re: Unknown Philips TV
Television manufacturers almost never did! Somewhere I have an magazine picture of a TV displaying an actual Telcan playback. It's amazing that these simple machines worked at all, and a pity they didn't sell. If they had, we'd be finding long lost TV shows amongst the dusty reels.
