*************************************

I was given a copy of the Boys' Book of Crystal Sets for my 9th birthday, and successfully built some of the designs using parts and solder begged from a neighbour who worked in a Radio/TV shop. My attempts at soldering (using a small tinmans' iron heated over the meths burner of my Mamod steam engine) left much to be desired, and were a cause of much anxiety to my mother. Consequently, I quickly became the proud owner a 1/4" Solon Electric Soldering Iron. I was then able to burn the kitchen table at the flick of a switch!

The book, although probably long out of print, can be downloaded here.
