The World of the Children 4 Ch. 3 RADIO
Hi. I wonder how many of us got interested in radio by reading about radio in volume 4 of The World of the Children. I attach the pictures of two radios that are described. Does anyone have a variable capacitor just like the one shown? I never built these two radios at the time I was reading the book in the late sixties..Rich

I wonder if anyone can identify that variable capacitor. Here are two shots of it. Looks to be made by Jackson Bros.. I don't have a JB catalogue to look at. Rich

Re: The World of the Children 4 Ch. 3 RADIO
I see this World of the Children book is from 1955 Rich. I can't specifically ID the VC but it does seem similar [with that dial] to ones used in early baseboard type sets [a relative was still using one of those for Radio 4 in the early Seventies]. It seems likely these could have been salvaged items to build the radio or even still around as new perhaps? J Bros were certainly major figures in component manufacture and featured in the Home Radio Catalogues as I remember!

Here's a Jackson Brothers advert from Modern Wireless May 1924.
I would guess your condensor dates from about the same time. Peter |

Give the man a coconut. Thanks for that Peter. It was more or less just a guess on my part!

I like the fact that the tuning condenser has that pointer thingy attached.

Re: The World of the Children 4 Ch. 3 RADIO
I had a set of the World of Children when I was a child, I loved them, told you how to make and do so many things, all told by relating the adventures of two children, I forget their names, and their father.
One I clearly remember is where the boy is brought home by a policeman having been found flashing a torch at a window, supposedly the jewellers but it becomes clear that he was trying to find the speed of light by timing the reflection of the flashes. This led to a detailed explanation as to how the speed of light could be measured. My favorite story however was how to make gunpowder, which I followed with great success and several very satisfactory bangs. No padding children in cotton wool in those days! |
