Regentone and RGD transistor radios.

I have just finished making a quick and simple web page to show the Regentone and RGD transistor radios in the KB Museum. There a few models which need some better or additional photos taken.
They are there together with the KB and ITT models by virtue that many of them share the same chassis as the KB and ITT models.

There appear to be some anomalies with the dates as I would have expected the model numbers to run in sequence with the dates.
Can anyone help with official documents giving information on the dates the radios were introduced.
I have one RGD catalogue from 1974, (also now available to view on the RGD page) but I cannot take the dates from a single catalogue as the models often spanned a few years.

That’s a nice web page Mike.
I noticed the Erie P.A.C assembly in the early radios. Memories of removing the ceramic encapsulation to change one of the components, not so much in radios but definitely in TV’s of the time.
I think there was some connection between STC and Erie.

The change from UK made to Far East made sets from around the middle 1960’s also shows up very clearly.

Hello Mike,

Very well presented sets, including a few models I've never met, though I do have a BT12 which I notice isn't represented by photos at RM.org yet.

Are the dates you're working with taken from the third edition of 'Radio! Radio!'? My copy hasn't emerged from the packing cases yet, but I've generally found its directory of transistor radios very reliable on release dates (pricing's another matter, plenty of instances of prices including PT being quoted as though they didn't and vice-versa).

Nice one Paul, the BT12 is now represented in RM.
I have been through the dates given in RR and updated and reshuffled the order on my web page.

A very interesting addition to your museum. In our local town the two main TV shops were almost opposite each other, one was the main ITT/KB dealer for west Cornwall the other was a smaller dealer which use to sell RGD Tv's and radios.
Looking back ITT had an interesting business model and using its RGD brand they were probably able to expand their sales to smaller shops as well as using their main dealers for their ITT/KB models.

A couple more clones, an Argosy Clubman and an Anglotone - not a brand I've ever met anywhere else - copy of the Regenteener, identical but for the badging and a bright red case.

Very interesting, the Argosy Clubman looks very much like the KB Carioca but with a different layout of speaker and dial on the front panel.
I am wondering if the Anglotone is the ACE brand clone.

In 1960 Argosy was bought by STC along with Regentone, RGD and ACE brands, to join their KB group. I believe this was the start of the formation of CRTS, (Combined Radio & Television Service Ltd) who were the organisation responsible for issuing the service manuals and spares for all these different brands.

Argosy and ACE do have a few sets represented in the Radio Museum.

I thought you may be interested in this Regentone transistor Radiogram. It uses a modified version of the BT17/18 chassis covering Long and Medium waves. Using 3 9volt batteries two for the radio/amp and 1 for the gram motor. It works extremely well and gives great sound. The only thing wrong with it is the circlip from the turntable is missing. I did recap it as the Plessey caps had died.
The only thing is I cannot find a model number for it. But knowing how Regentone, RGD and KB had similar models I expect these were issued under those marques

I wonder if it is the BRG19, the description on RM seems to fit the bill.
"Battery radiogram, two PP7 batteries for radio & one PP9 for the GU7 record player. TC8H cartridge. The chassis is electricaly identical with models BT16 & BT17 with the addition of an OC71 pre-amp for the pick-up."

the description fits very well indeed, the circuit must be in one of the red books I don't have. It definitely has the extra transistor preamp, takes the 3 batteries and, as far as I remember has the same circuit board as the BT16/17. So I will get some photos of it and let you have them. But it may be a couple of weeks before I can do so
