Question Service Info. for Sharp VC-M305 VCR

I need to know how to reassemble the deck mechanism, specifically how the cam gear fits & locates. Having tried 3 or 4 times to refit said gear correctly without success, I'm out of ideas. Can anyone help, please?

Sorry LW, I don't recognise the model number, whilst I do have a few Sharp VCR manuals, some in pdf format, they are all different decks.
Most of the time I could mechanically align most Sharp decks without needing the manual (as they were mostly straight forward with nothing unusually 'weird') some did have counter-intuitive timing marks that I did need a manual for, these were mostly the late models, and probably the last models of VCRs made by sharp.
Sadly the last/later manuals of most manufacturers (not just Sharp) had very sparse timing details.

Thanks, vhs doctor, for that link. The mechanism is indeed the same as in the M305. Looking at the relevant pages of that manual, I should be able to reassemble the master cam gear correctly. Thanks, also 'Red to black' Probably, not being familiar with that mechanism, I'm just not getting the sequence right when refitting the gear.

Unfortunately the deck in the VC-M211, etc. isnot the same as that in the VC-M305 is marked 83VI (Sept. 2002). Whilst the principle is the same, the 'devil is in the detail' as they say, and I cannot work out how to refit the cam gear correctly. No matter how I try, with the deck in the 'tape ejected' position, I cannot find a point on the cam gear's rotation which allows it to locate correctly. My own fault, I know. I should have taken a picture before removing the gear.

Hi

Can you attach a photo from the top and the bottom from your mechanism?

Are you sure the deck shouldn't be aligned in the cassette down position?

VHS Doctor, I post some photos later today. Maarten, you may be right, though I assumed it would be easier to refit the cam gear with the deck in the eject position. To do so in the cassette loaded position involves winding the pinch-roller assembly down into the operating position, but I'll try that.

I don't know about Sharp, but for example Philips, requires to time the deck in cassette down , tape not threaded position with the lift not mounted and then mount the lift.

Here are some pictures of the upper and lower deck and the cam gear. I have tried to locate the cam correctly with the deck in both the loaded and ejected positions without success, and don't really want to remove the cassette carrier unless I have to. Maybe I'm missing something but, IMHO, if the cam gear can be removed without dismantling other parts, it should be possible to refit it with the other parts in situ. Correct me if I'm wrong, folks! Unfortunately I don't know how the timing marks on the cam gear and the pinch roller drive gear should be relative to each other. My main problem seems to be locating the projection on the bottom of the cassette carrier into the right slot in the cam gear!

The timing mark must be the hole on the cam gear surface.

That, indeed, is one timing mark. There is another mark on the small black gearwheel which winds the pinch roller up and down, so I assume that must be the other. It's working out the relationship between the one and the other.

There's likely a spring loaded lever for something like braking or eject/carriage, which has an arm or stud that engages with the cam, and which needs to be shoved into a certain position as the gear is replaced, so as to keep it under a certain tension. Anyone who has worked on a BSR autochanger will know what I mean!

Ben, I have worked on many a BSR & Garrard Autochanger, so I do know what you mean. What seems to be the problem with this Sharp VCR deck is that somehow despite trying to refit the cam every way possible, I cannot get the sequence right, so, vhsdoctor, thanks for the link to that service manual which, hopefully, will help me to see where I'm going wrong!

Limewire why have you remove the cam gear? Do you have broken gear?

Usually there was no need to remove the cam gear unless it was either damaged or if you needed to re-time/re-build the entire deck, 9 times out of 10 it was either mode switch problems or damaged gears.

The problem was that the deck was partly jammed due to hardened grease. With hindsight (a wonderful thing!) I could probably have cured that without removing the cam gear, which, as far as I can see, is undamged, but, having done so, I foolishly thought it would be an easy 5-minute job to refit said gear!

The timing diagram provided by vhs doctor should enable a re-build. the information supplied by later service manuals leaves a lot to be desired.

I've downloaded the Manual from the link provided by vhs doctor, R2B, and hopefully this will help me solve the problem!
