I bid on it and won at the starting price. Next job is to fit it, that will be a first. Last time I did anything like this was in the early seventies with an AT1005 tone arm and a Garrard 401, could only afford a Goldring G800 after I bought the 401! I remember it all costing £65 and my dad had to build a plinth to house it, I was 17 at the time. I want it back!!!! Bought it from REW in Tottenham Court Road.

Replacement tone arm and soundbox arrived today. Initially very pleased, then noticed that the barrel where the needle goes and it’s screw was broken. I checked the eBay listing and sure enough if I had looked more carefully I would have spotted it.

Any way I will place a ‘wanted’ in the appropriate part of the forum for a Columbia no9 soundbox.

Teach me to be more careful

They're often snapped off. Should be easy enough to get the stub removed and then use the needle screw from your old one to replace it - no need for another sound box.

How do you get the broken stub out? There don't appear to be any screw extractors small enough.

Have managed to drill and tap the old stubb and removed it. It was more difficult than this one sentence! I put that down to my skills in building model locomotives some 25-30 years ago.

Well done for getting it drilled out - there's always a way round these things. In a recent thread of mine regarding a 'home made record player', I had to drill out a broken off pin in the spindle of a Garrard speed change control.

I've just collected an old HMV 145 cabinet gramophone from a friend of a friend tonight. It's consigned to the garage for the time being, but I took some pictures of it when I got it out of the back of the car earlier on. Now I've looked at the pictures, I can see what model of gramophone your arm and sound box have come from. If you look, you can see how close the arm mounting point on yours is to the turntable platter compared with the greater distance on my HMV, thus accounting for that very bad tracking error on yours.

One odd thing I noticed, the lid stay is on the right hand side, but on other 117a machines have the stay on the left!
There is a cut out on the right hand side of the turntable board that looks as it it should be for the stay, but no signs of any fixing holes.
