You could run it from a suitably rated 115 volt transformer without too much modification, anode of the rectifier connected to 115 volt, perhaps in series with a low value resistor, a couple of 12v 200mA bulbs in series with the valve heater chain connected to 115 volts.

Having spoken to Gerry at Crowthorne tubes, and done the appropriate calculations, I'm going to replace the R20N with a 25w bulb.
If anyone sees any pitfalls please let me know!
Cheers

Back to the transformer, where can I source something suitable? Not much at RS or Cricklewood...
Cheers

Just to draw a line under this one, herewith picture of a beautiful R20N donated by a very kind Jean-Yves from the French site Rétro-Forum.
Merci beaucoup Jean- Yves!

I was advised that a mains tungsten halogen bulb GU10 type was the best substitute for a baretter, they come in various wattages.

Is that wirewound resistor covered in an asbestos material?

Well I never thought of that. Were resistors of this vintage asbestos coated? Maybe I should seal the offending article with PVA or similar?
