Default Sony clock radio.

… to continue. (Original thread gone as past its keep-by date.)

When I had a look at Studio263’s Sony clock motor the problem was the teeth on the fastest wheel were too chewed up to engage with the pinion on the rotor. That caused it to lose time.

So, we needed a new wheel. To cut a brass wheel isn’t too difficult, but to avoid constant noise was; it had to be non-metallic. Not easy obtaining a suitable material and cutting teeth on it was, so we opted for a Tufnol ready made wheel from HPC.

This was the correct diameter but too thick and required:
  • the old pinion (part of its wheel) turning down
  • reducing the wheel thickness
  • making a mandrel to press into its hole so the adjoining boss could be removed
  • broaching out the hole so the pinion could be pressed in
All done and running well!

Wow, that's impressive, Mike!

I had a sneaky suspicion that if anyone could fix it, you could.

Impressive indeed. Tim said he had sent it to Mike. He will be really pleased. The model of clock radio he has is much rarer than the later type with the numbers on drums. Well done!!

Nice work, just a pity it gets hidden away inside.

Bows
I am so impressed with your ability to do jobs like this, when I think in the past how I given up repairs because of similar faults to do with gear wheels etc.
So thanks for showing me that it can be done, a really nice bit of work to see.

Thanks, everyone! My trusty Unimat 3 must take some of the accolade, though. Plus the fact that I've been making and repairing clocks and radios for over half a century; for the latter, doing it for a living.

As you see I'm banned from the throwaway society; I suspect that applies to quite a few of our members, though.

Throwaway society, ah, who needs it? Just goes to show what can be done when someone expends the time and effort and has the expertise to save what most would bin. Excellent work, sir.

I like the mock wood effect cabinets as opposed to the white ones as most have gone yellow by now which spoils the appearance.
