Class X Suppressor Caps. as HT Decouplers
Would any problems arise from the us of class X 275vac Capacitors as HT supply decouplers?(provide of course that the voltage rating is adequate for the job in hand) Reading a post on the 'diyaudio forum' a few minutes ago makes me wonder if there is some reason I hadn't thought of not to use them for this purpose. Some time ago now, when short of any more suitable capacitors, I fitted a couple of 0.22uf X2 caps. in parallell to 22uf electrolytics decoupling the HT supply to the early stages of a Music Angel Valve Amplifier. So far as I know no trouble has been caused long-term by this(The amp was returned to it's owner almost a year ago)

There's no reason at all not to use them if the voltage rating is adequate, apart from cost of course.
I'd treat anything you read in audiophile forums with - er - 'skepticism' Paul |

Paul, I do tend to be sceptical about some of the things on 'diyaudio.com' forums. As you may know(others here may not) they do promote their site as being 'by fanatics, for fanatics' Probably enough said!

sometimes you can pick these caps up as job lots cheaply, I often use them where I can in non critical tv restorations

Absolutely none at all! I have done this on a number of occasions when I've been short of capacitors. 275V AC works out to somewhere around 500V DC so there is no problem whatsoever. Most of the X class capacitors I have come from scrap TV or power supply panels at zero cost. When I rebuilt the capacitor block in my Philips 274A (the set in the avatar) I used an X class capacitor for HT decoupling (think it was .22uF). No problems at all and I don't expect any. Rich.

Re: Class X Suppressor Caps. as HT Decouplers
Hi All,
I've used these happily for many years. Usually X2 caps have a DC rating of 630V DC. The grey Arcotronics ones are very cheap even if bought from RS (Maplin have been known to sell them very cheaply) and the lead length is quite good. They are likely to more reliable than standard 400V caps, what makes them cheap is the fact that they are used in almost every mains product these days as opposed to 400V DC caps that are hardly used at all. The main problems are that they don't look fantastic and they are usually the wrong shape for component stuffing. Having said that they do fit well in the bakelite housings of the Philco 444 multi-caps. Cheers Andy Last edited by beery; 3rd Mar 2008 at 5:27 pm. Reason: addition of 444 comment |
