Mitsubishi HS-E82 VCR Bad Picture

Good morning everyone.
This time I have a Mitsubishi HS-E82.
It was a bargain that I found with original remote included.
The problem reported by the owner is that it was working but no output video.
I took it appart and immediately saw that three 470uf capacitors were leaking on the signal board and one in the Hi-Fi board the same value too. I have located them in the pictures in red marker.
I replaced them, cleaned all the liquid remains and the video output got working again.
I saw too that were three surface mounted capacitors, two near the 470uf and one in a vertical board. I replaced them too, they were leaking too.
I replaced one surface mounted capacitor in the drum motor pcb, it was leaking too.
Now, resuming.
I have video output, vcr menu and tv channels with good picture, if I attach RCA cables to audio input AUX, and a bluetooth receiver I have good Stereo Sound, but no stereo in tv channels nor tape playback. I have the problem you can see in the video that I´ve attached.
I cleaned the upper drum heads, with printer paper and IPA, like I do to my other VCR´s, no luck.
Is this bad worn heads symptoms? Or I need to investigate deeper in the pcb´s for more bad caps?

hello,

not bad heads, but tape transport definitely looks misaligned.
and i highly suspect someone messed the tape guides when video was wrong.
so you'll have to reajust them and i'm sure you'll get it back

Hi whaka54.
You´re right!
The tape guides are messed up, maybe by the last owner.
I´m trying to fine tune them, I have a much better picture now, but it needs more tuning!!

Don't neglect the PSU, as any bad capacitors in there may cause the machine to behave erratically. Given its age, I would highly recommend you replace all capacitors in the PSU, minus perhaps the main reservoir cap (in the primary), as these rarely go bad (safely discharge and check ESR anyway).

As always, caution advised when dealing with incoming mains and the potential of stored high-voltage DC.

I already did, that’s always the first thing I do when repairing old devices.
I recap all the PSU everytime!

Congrats. That's a nice S-VHS machine from the era when build quality was still in manufacturer's minds. The trick to adjust the tape path alignment without an oscilloscope is to use a Hi-Fi tape recorded in the LP speed on a known-good machine and perform the adjustment until the Hi-Fi audio is clear without any 50Hz buzzing noise with the tracking control in the center or reset position. Although the picture might be clear, the hi-fi audio is much more sensitive to tracking errors and there's very little room for errors, especially in LP. Then confirm tape interchangability by playing back a tape recorded on the HS-E82 in LP on another machine.
