So this is a set in quite the bad state was wondering if anyone could identify it and whether or not its worth saving at all. It's in a market that I go to and the guy says he needs to bin it the tube is dead and it's missing the doors and I can't get behind it. So was wondering if anyone could identify it, in case anyone else wants to go look at the tv. It's in the barras in glasgow it's £10.

Could this be a Defiant model 1753? 17"CRT
https://www.thevalvepage.com/tvmanu/defiant/defiant.htm. The picture isn't too good to see the condition of the cabinet, though the woodwork and refinishing shouldn't be too difficult as it appears to be all flat sides with no fancy intricate bits!!. As to whether the set is worth restoring, You would have to have a look at the chassis to see if any important or unobtainable parts are missing and for signs of corrosion which could ruin wound components. Obviously a replacement CRT would be needed as a minimum which might be challenging. I presume that the bowler hat on the rear cover has been bashed or knocked off causing the neck of the CRT to be snapped off. I think that paying £10 for it would be reasonable, although I would like to see if the chassis was complete, unmolested and damp free, and the cabinet holds no nasty surprises!! Christopher Capener

It does look like that Defiant, and you're right the cabinet isn't too bad I'm going back tomorrow to try get a look inside. And the way he said he broke it was he put it down on the floor so hard that the tube broke, don't know what I'm going to do if I decide to get it since I have no car.

My advice would be to leave that set where it is. The necks of tubes are usually deliberately knocked off so that they can be safely scrapped - I don't believe the story about it being put down on the floor hard.
You've got to ask yourself where you're going to find a replacement tube. You can't legally have them sent through the post as they're classed as a dangerous item, ok if still fitted in a set and thus protected by the sets safety features, I would guess. It's the same for transporting one in a car, we've probably all done it at some time back in the day, but it would invalidate your insurance if you were involved in an accident/incident. Even if you were able to eventually source a tube, you may then find that the line output transformer is duff. The doors are missing and its history is unknown. It's probably worth a tenner if you really know what you're doing with old TVs, but if not, then I'd save yourself the potential grief and leave it where it is - there's a lot better out there. BTW, it's decades since I've been to Barrowlands (Barras), a classic place! |

It will be an awful lot of work to restore it, and it's not a particularly desirable set anyway. I would just walk away if it's not possible to just scavenge the valves. Even the valves aren't going to be worth much.

"... he put it down on the floor so hard..."
Perhaps that's a euphemism for "he dropped it" ... |

If it is the original, the CRT it will be the Mazda CRM171, an early rectangular faceplate tube having a 35mm neck. No graphite coating. The CRM 172 has the coating so a separate EHT smoothing capacitor is not required. 12.6volt 0.3amp heaters.
A Mullard MW43-64 or MW43-69 has the same bulb shape but has the 38mm neck. The scanning coils might not accept this tube. Apart from the missing doors which can be replicated, the set shouldn't present any difficulties servicing the electronics. DFWB. |

Hi,
Seeing this nice set with the eyes of a german I should advice you to take it. If these 10 pounds don`t hurt you, maybe you can get it for 7-8 pounds, you have a nice old telly. ![]() Spend this set a new live! ![]() I don`t know, how much you have to invest for the reproduction of the doors, but even they will be gone for the future, it is a nice set. If inside everything is untouched, you have a nice project for the dark cold winter. Does this set comes with a back? Question is, who should be able to help you with a good CRT (incl. deflection yoke). You can check this here or on ebay. Transportation: Are you able to get a, let`s call it a "grandmother shopping car" on two wheels? Take something to mount the set on it, you should be able to carry it home by bus and/or train. ![]() IF the lopt is bad ![]() P.S. Maybe the seller allows you, to leave the broken CRT at his garbage can. Regards, German Dalek ![]()

Yes, I'd be sorely tempted too: something of a luxury set in its day, not too many 17" five-channel TVs around. The link in post #2 reminds me I used to have an oddity, a 1252C/RA without the television: someone had very neatly sawed that whole section out, and reattached the top of the cabinet to the radio to make a plausible bedside or coffee-table console.

It would be fine if the tube was still intact, but it isn't. A complete, fully evacuated tube, even if low emission, could at least stand a chance of being boosted. Finding a replacement tube is the difficult part and even if one was found, it would unlikely to be in the Glasgow area (unless he was very lucky) and as I said before, you can't just pop one in the post and send it!

I'd leave it. Not a particularly collectable set, nor a nice looking one. Loads of work finding replacement parts and loads of work to be done to get it working - maybe you want that? At the end of the day it's a set that's going to be worth a few tens of pounds once restored. Yes, I realise there's more to vintage radios and TVs than their monetary value, but that's my view, leave well alone and concentrate on another find. In the nigh on 50 years that I've been in vintage radio & TV, I've been there, and in the early years I would have bought it, then regretted it and struggled to sell it on for less than I bought it for. After a few decades I learnt how to walk past sets whose condition just didn't warrant the huge amount of work needed to restore them. Now if it was a pre-war TV, that's an entirely different thing, a total rebuild would be interesting, challenging and well worth the effort.

If the tube hadn't been necked, I would have grabbed it, but as it is...

Ok since I'm probably not going to pick this up, this is a little off topic but where do I find good TVs. Because I go to markets carboot sales I check a ton of platforms but I usually never find anything so would appreciate some advice.

That's it, if you're looking for something 50+ years old options are few and far between unless you're ready to travel a long way to the major collector events. Now and again a set may be offered near you on eBay, and it may well be cheap because few potential buyers are likely to be aware of it. If you have a nearby house clearance-type auction room it's worth watching, a few 1950s table TVs and a projection console have passed through my small town's auction in the five years I've been back here.

Thanks for the suggestions since I'm not really active with the community's around this stuff I wasn't aware there were collectors event's. As for auctions I might try go to one of the auction houses although TVs don't seem like the thing they'd have, thanks for the suggestions though.
