Default Best place to get PP9s?

I picked up a Hacker Sovereign at a Wootton Bassett past and restored it. This is now a really lovely set, but the rechargeable batteries that came with it don't last long and seem to self-discharge with lack of use. It's a hassle to put them on charge for the recommended 16 hrs. New rechargeable batteries are prohibitively expensive, so it's now time to get a couple of 'traditional' PP9s.

Where do you obtain yours? Do any shops or supermarkets still sell them?

Not sure whether or not it's the best place to get them but Wilkinsons still sell Ever Ready Silver PP9s for 4. If your local store doesn't have them in stock they can be ordered on-line for collection.

Often old PP9s, particularly the plastic-cased variety, can be re-stuffed. 6 AA cells in a holder will fit inside. I am not sure how the capacities compare, but AA cells are available just about anywhere.

AA cells aren't quite as good. Top of the range ones promise about 3Ah it seems, whereas the Ever Ready silver PP9 promises 4.5Ah. I suppose this is what you'd expect. In the end capacity comes down to volume of chemical and with AAs there's a fair amount of non-chemical space inside a stuffed PP9's volume.

Cheers,

GJ

"Aldi/Lidl" seem to be acquiring a name on this forum for various useful stuff. There's a branch of both in Evesham. I feel a scouting trip coming on...

Despite the reduced capacity once you've gone to the trouble of fitting a 6xAA holder into an expired PP9 it is an economical way forward and reasonably future proof too. The holder can be had for less than 2 and six AA cells should work out at no more than 50p a set if bought in blister packs from a pound shop. Depends on how much use you make of PP9s I guess.

I'd need two 6xAA holders for this set. No more popping into Maplin in Cheltenham. Do any other shops sell them?

Thanks. That's another Evesham store I can check out.

I'm now seriously considering the (2x) 6x AA route too, since it could prove cheaper.

If you're happy to buy 6xAA holders on-line (not for everyone I know) there's plenty of choice. I found one for 1.89 inc p&p from a UK seller on eBay in a matter of moments.

What else uses a pp9 other than a 40+ year old radio ? There must be enough users of the latter for the pp9 to still be produced/sold .. p.s. I think the 'repro' Bush 82 uses one ?

Interesting question. All I can say is that 40 year old transistor radios are very popular - in this household anyway!

I've heard that 2 PP3's connected in parallel can work well as a PP9 substitute.
