Vintage Philips/Cossor tape recorder
Hello everyone. I am a new member, who after reading some posts about vintage tape recorders decided to get one.
It is a Cossor/ Philips Stellaphone 4track ST458/CR1604. The problem I have is it plays but does not rewind/fast forward and the tape counter does not work. Help needed please. I removed the cover and looking inside I can see a broken belt, the main drive wheel or is it a flywheel? has a belt around it. Can anyone describe where the other belts should go would the friction pads cause the rewind/fast forward problem? |

Re: vintage tape recorder
Hi and welcome . your FF and REW issues are solely related to belts . I would get a complete new set and replace the lot . The one on the capstan will be near to breaking anyway if the others have . Once you have those in place , then you can continue to diagnose any issues you have , this is how the belts go ....
There is a chap in italy on ebay I use for belts all the time . He`s great and all his belts are great too . search "SET BELTS EXTRA STRONG STELLA ST-458 REEL TO REEL NEW FACTORY FRESH ST458" and you will find him |

Re: Vintage Philips/Cossor tape recorder
This is a hybrid model and there may be sufficient stage gain for a magnetic microphone. A crystal type may overload it. You will need to find one with a DIN plug. I bet Maarten in Haarlem (Holland) will know!

Looking at it I would say the belts just slip on . Doesnt look like you have to remove anything . As for a microphone , I would start at ebay . Thats where I always go .

The photo in post #2 shows the top of the deck, but with the tape heads platform removed, so you would have to unscrew that first, in order to gain full access to the belts.

Luckily these machines used belts made out of rubber rather than toffee!
