The policeman in the end is Paul Eddington
My Dad was a police officer in the Cornwall force (Launceston) and in the late 50's and early 60's he would often have to hitch hike, use public transport to incidents or walk the force only had a few vehicles for the whole County at that time.

Dixon was a series I quite enjoyed, I will look out a few episodes.
