Perdio Multiband Radio
Does anyone remember a Perdio radio produced around 1965 which included several short wave bands? The tuner was fairly unusual in that it used a turret arrangement for switching the coils, similar to the Cyldon turret tuner used in VHF TVs. It was similar in size to the PR36, had a grey mottled cabinet, had a black leather strap handle across the top and a telescopic aerial with a red plastic blob at the top. I think it cost around £20
I had one in the mid 60s but have been unable to find any information/photos of it. Just curious to know if anyone owns or has seen one. Thanks, Stendec |

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
I only remember seeing a rough example a few years ago - Radio! Radio! lists the Multi-Band 91 (August '60) and Multi-Band 102 (October '61), I suspect it was the latter. Both were LW/MW/3SW. I think there may be a photo of one in an article on Perdio that appeared in Radio Bygones a while back. There was also the Marco Polo, a much more elaborate creation from 1964 - 17 transistors, nine bands, £99.15s - but I think that one barely reached production.

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
Afraid I don't have any pix (parted with the set in late 60s) but wonder if David (HamishBoxer) could provide any?

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
Have just found it listed in available circuit diagrams. I believe it is the Perdio "MultiBand 102". Does anyone have any photos of this model?

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
Thanks for the "perdio.doc" file Graham. Unfortunately my computer seems unable to display it and just says "Unable to load graphics conversion filter"
Any ideas why? |

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
The "image" was taken from the full service sheet which is a pdf document. I would have liked to have saved it as a jpg or bmp, but my lack of experience in using Adobe Acrobat (full version, not the reader) meant I had to paste it into a Microsoft Word Document. I can open it in Microsoft Word 2000.

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
Here's the one from Rod Burman's article in Radio Bygones 54. To quote:
"The set was always difficult to make and was a mechanical nightmare. In order to reduce the backlash on the tuning control the drive cord used steel wire which was actually designed for flying control-line model aircraft, and there was only one person at Perdio who could successfully assemble a drive cord. The production run was 7500 sets and I was most surprised when one turned up at a car boot sale in Ascot a couple of years ago". Rod Burman says he himself thought of the bandswitch arrangement with boards gathered around the wavechange switch: AB metals were commissioned to make special switches for the set, with long spills attached to each tag. Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
I got one of these from the NCVF a few years ago. It looks quite tidy so if you want a picture of it then let me know. These were quite common in the Cornish coastal village I use to live in. As well as picking up the Shipping forcasts on 1500m they were also used to pick up the more local weather bulletins from Lands End Radio and monitor the lifeboat and other maritime traffic that use to occupy the old AM marine bands.
Untill this topic I had no idea what the model number of this set was, so many thanks

Re: Perdio Multiband Radio
Thanks for the information Simon. I now live near Portreath so was interested in the Cornish coastal village connection. Any photos you can supply would be most welcome. Strange that of a production run of 7,500 sets so few seem to have survived.
By the way, Happy New Year to all on the Vintage Radio Forum. |
