I think they were quite stiff so maybe the knob is loose.

It's a wirewound control so it would seem the wire has probably broken. Need to take it apart to find out. Probably a standard value pot can be fitted in it's place.

If I can fit a standard Valve pot it would make life a lot easier..

I dont think a standard pot will work, if I remember, the pot is around 20W, maybe more.

Hello. This was discussed on Vinyl Engine and a wiring diagram posted that might be of help. The high voltage diagram is the one for UK mains.
As Michael says, it will need to be a high wattage control but not sure of the actual rating.
Hope this is of some help.

Edit: further reading shows a 25 watt OHMITE RHS10KE being a good fit if you can find one.

As a sort-of aside, I was amazed to find (while looking for something else) that RS sell 'rheostats', including the one in this thread :

Some of the higher power ones are _very_ expensive, and I wonder what they are used for these days.

The control for a Garrard RC98 would probably work. But this isn't much help because if anything, the RC98 is uncommon; fewer were made than the 4HF.

Hi Skaman. Any news on this? I am interested to hear if you got it sorted as I have a couple 4HF's and the pitch control is a weak spot on these. The actual fitted controls are the sort you would find on the back of TV's.

I had my first 4HF back around 1972 and the control smoked and got replaced by a couple of wirewound resistors (by my Dad). We later discovered that the motor had shorting turns.

On my later 4HF's there is a slight burning smell if you adjust the control but it clears and the motors only get warm so I assume Garrard only meant the controls to be adjusted sparingly.
