I have had lots of X trays when in and out of hospital as a kid and also more recently I remember on a visit to our local nuclear powerstation being a bit worried ide still be radioactive from all the X Ray's fortunately I wasn't. Also when visiting the orthodontist he would set the film up tell me to be still then he and the nurse would scurry out the room I always felt a little uneasy!

Well someone had to do it..
with an innocent-looking DY802 and much improved
with an evil looking PD500.

Pictures taken with DY802 and PD500

One power triode that hasn't yet been pressed into audio service... or has it?

I'd be hugely surprised if someone, somewhere hasn't tried it with electrostatic panels at some point....

I need to dig mine out sometime and do a bit of restoration work on it. It did work, but is missing some of the foil segments and one of its leather belts, which was replaced by a length of knicker elastic - those storage 'jars' can pack a bit of a punch!

There's a Fender PD500 guitar amp, but thankfully it's just the model number.

Can you give the details/author of The Home Mechanic?
It needs to be in my Technical Section!

Would the target of a vidicon fluoresce when hit by x-rays? If it did then it could be used as a flying spot scanner to give real time images.
If not vidicons ,or similar, then maybe a solid state web cam my work ,for a bit, until the x-rays killed the semiconductor junctions.

Probably not but the x-rays would do the same as light does to the surface and it would work. Just look at some videos of things like nuclear reactors, lots of spots from neutrons in the picture.

One approach - perhaps the standard one - for using conventional cameras to image X-rays is to use a fluorescer optimised for X-ray-to-visible conversion and then to couple the light from the fluorescer to the camera optically e.g. https://www.ximea.com/en/products/ap.../x-ray-cameras.

As part of a medical trial I once had a tube threaded down to a specific place in my intestine using real-time X-ray imaging to follow it on its way. I wasn't paying much attention to the technology unfortunately as the procedure was distractingly uncomfortable (let's just say that's an understatement ...). But it seemed to work pretty well. They gave me the attached still image as a souvenir.

Cheers,

GJ

Interestingly, depending on how long ago that procedure was, the equipment used would have used three valves:
1 The x-ray tube which would have used a rotating tungsten coated carbon Anode and the tube would be sitting a bath of oil to try and disipate the heat but the Anode would still have been glowing red.
2 An image intensifying tube which has an Xray sensitve phosphor on its input which is about 16 inches diameter and has an output phosphor for visible light at 1 inch diameter.
3 It is entirely possible that the TV camera imaging the output phosphor used a 1 inch vidicon.

The latest versions use a direct imaging flat phosphor screen to produce the picture but still use the same X-ray tube, which costs about £50,000 by the way.

Yep recall having mine done and peering down the viewer - very fuzzy I recall.

Those great books - also things like PE Nucleonics for the home experimenter series in the mid 60's - great things for kids back in the day even if they did make you glow in the dark. My favourite one was in a boys hobby book under rifle shooting "Never shoot at a closed door as someone may come though it!'. One imagines Victorian lads blazing away at numerous doors.

I have quite a few oddball books, even have a children’s book with a section on traceless poisons and another section on how to make a cannon with details of making the powder.

This was still going on several years later. Attached a similar section from 'The Boy Electrician' originally published 1920 though this edition is a 1941 update with additional advanced topics such as television. Note there is now a safety warning about X-Rays (though not for the cyanide to make the fluorescent screen ).

I had that book when I was about eleven.
https://worldradiohistory.com/BOOKSH...n-2-Morgan.pdf
I was so fascinated by it I "borrowed" it from the school library, permanently.

I haven't seen it in its entirety since then, but I still think of certain electrical principles in terms of the diagrams in that book, particularly the induction coil and resonator, demonstrating Hertzian waves.

I'm sure I tried to sabotage one of my mothers Consulate menthol cigarettes as per page 213.

When I got interested in radio three years ago, I reproduced Hertz's dipole experiment using the coherer detector in the attached photo below. The glass tube contains silver fillings and it is very sensitive. Mine was a lash-up with two 70cm brass rods with a spark gap transmitter, a matching dipole receiver, HT ceramic cap and a 10KV flyback transformer. I can set off the coherer a dozen meters away or light up a neon bulb at a close distance < 1 meter.

I still have a working 1920 Wimhurst electrostatic machine. It wont have enough juice to produce X-ray for sure. You can create very weak x-ray using 20KV TV flyback transformer with certain type of valve tubes for sure.

Disclaimer: I do not endorse the following reckless behavior below. The x-ray experiment in the video is very dangerous( in Ukrainian) and viewers should not attempt unless they know what they are doing:
