What's this? A quiz.
I bought this three weeks ago for 50p! I had my suspicions but had to wait until today to have a closer look.
Someone may know exactly what it is, but if not I'll post a further picture which will give the game away. Made of plastic although the pictures make it look like metal. Have fun!

Looks like a 3 pole 4 way switch amongst other things.
Air sensor of some sort, maybe temperature or humidity. Ian |

A tourist memento, a miniature replica of the tombstone of the phantom twiddler. The real one is in storage, unused. We just haven't caught him yet.

Re: What's this? A quiz.
It's not one of those "piezo punkah" thingies is it?- that waved plastic strips around with an AC mains supply as a quiet and supposedly long-lasting alternative to circulating fans?

It's not some sort of voltage dropper, is it?

Re: What's this? A quiz.
You did say a “Mains lead” is connected to it, if so, could you state its rating?

Re: What's this? A quiz.
It looks very much like one of the burner assemblies from my oil fired Rayburn, but plastic rather than heat resistant steel precludes that.
I vaguely recall my mother telling me (70 years ago) that it was a "wim-wam" that was used for sun winding purposes. Les. |

Re: What's this? A quiz.
...and the winner is... DAVE MOLL!
It was in a box of cine projector bits and when I peered through the slats l could see a thin sheet of mica ( or asbestos!) wound with a fine wire. As you pull out the square shaft you can see the approximate voltage. If it is a mica sheet I'll wire it up and test it, but if it's asbestos I'll take further advice with regard to use or disposal. Thanks to all who entered the quiz.

Re: What's this? A quiz.
Now I've got to research "the wigwam that winds the sun up"!
An advertising slogan?

Re: What's this? A quiz.
Many of the early GB (Gaumont British, later Rank) Equipments 16mm film projectors
used a 120v lamp, and an external dropper was required. I think the early projectors were actually Bell & Howell made in the USA. |
