Chapter 10 of the book "Radio Transmitters" by V.O. Stokes is a full write-up on the design of the high power types. Worth a read if you can find it.
The 1kW amplifier panels (using 4CX250B's) occasionally turn up at radio rallies. I've seen at least two, over the years, at Stockwood Park. I don't know if anybody has got one going.
It seems there was a 40kW version too...
