The problem was that the deck was partly jammed due to hardened grease. With hindsight (a wonderful thing!) I could probably have cured that without removing the cam gear, which, as far as I can see, is undamged, but, having done so, I foolishly thought it would be an easy 5-minute job to refit said gear!
