You were meant to remove the platter, fit the belt to the rim on its underside and over a little hook.

You then replace the platter positioned so that the hook is lined-up with the motor pulley, and rotate clockwise. The motor pulley then grabs the belt from the hook, and hey presto, you're threaded up and ready to play! Takes a few tries sometimes though.

Horrid decks though IMHO!
